Botox®

What is Botox®?

Botox® is a natural, purified protein administered in a quick, simple, non-surgical procedure (with no downtime) that temporarily relaxes wrinkle-causing muscles in people from age 18, resulting in a smoothed rejuvenated appearance.  The procedure for Botox® is a very simple and quick procedure, and like many of our patients, you can even have it done during your lunch breaks.

Is Botox® safe?

Botox® is very safe and usually have no or little side effects.  The most common side effect resulting from Botox® treatments is occasional bruising in the treated areas, which is temporary and can be easily covered withcosmetic concealers.

Botox® was the first Botulinum toxin type A that is approved by the US FDA in 1989 and has the longest period of registered clinical experience worldwide (approved in more than 75 countries).  In cosmetic use, Botox® has been widely tested and used safely for more than 10 years.  Long before it was even approved for cosmetic use, Botox® has already been used therapeutically to treat a variety of medical conditions such as ophthalmic disorders, muscle disorders, and even migraine headaches.

Botox® has quickly become the most popular non-surgical, aesthetic procedures in the United States today.  The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery estimates that almost 3 million procedures were performed in 2004.

What can Botox® do?
  • Reduce wrinkles and smooth out lines (frown lines between eyebrows, horizontal lines across forehead, crow’s feet around eye area);
  • Reduce pore size & oil production giving you a smooth, pore-less, porcelain look (sometimes known as Intradermal Botox®);
  • Contour and slim face / jaw (Botox® – Facial Contouring);
  • Contour and slim body (Botox® – Limb Contouring, eg. calves);
  • Lift and shape eyebrow, as well as widen your eyes;
  • Reduce excessive sweating (in areas like underarms, hands, feet).

Botox® – Reduce Wrinkles & Lines

Dynamic wrinkles appear when our facial muscles contract.  This constant muscle contraction causes lines and wrinkles to appear, becoming more pronounced and permanent with the passage of time.

How can Botox® treats wrinkles / lines?

Botox® treatment involves tiny injections of Botox® (in small quantities) to precise wrinkle-causing muscles which relaxes dynamic wrinkles, smoothes out lines by preventing the muscles from contracting into a wrinkle.  The treatment is simple and quick (usually about 10-15mins) with no downtime, and many patients often have it done on their lunch breaks.  Discomfort is very minimal and brief, most patients compare the sensation to an insect bite.  You may resume normal activity (even put on your makeup) immediately.

How long does Botox® last?

Visible effects can take place within 4-5 days, and full effect is seen in 7-10 days.  The effects of Botox® treatments usually last for 4-5 months, depending on individual.  When the lines start to reappear, simply repeat the same treatment to maintain the desired outcome.  Studies have shown that with repeat Botox® treatments, the effects can last longer, so less frequent treatment will be required in the future.

Will wrinkles come back (with a vengeance) once Botox® has faded?

Absolutely not!  If you decide to stop Botox® treatment, your face simply goes back to the original state (but certainly not worse).

Botox® - Facial Contouring

Most women consider a square jaw to be rather severe and masculine.  An oval shaped face is generally considered to be more feminine.  Chewing on foods and jaw grinding can result in overdeveloped muscles in the jawline.  This is known as masseter hypertrophy or more commonly, square jaw.   Botox® can be used for facial contouring / sculpting, weakening the masseter muscle, thus giving a softer angle at the jaw.  This is a highly successful, non-surgical way to beautifully contour the lower face to create a slimmer, more feminine jaw. Visible effects take place within 2-4 weeks, and full effect is seen in 2-3 months.  The effects of such Botox® treatments usually last for 6-12 months, depending on individual, longer if 2 treatments are given.

Botox® – Limb Contouring

Sometimes, we may have thicker calves that we would like, maybe due to exercise and sports.  Botox® can be injected into big calf muscles to reduce muscle bulk, giving a more streamlined / slimmer leg contour, thus enhancing the feminine appeal.   Visible effects take place within 2-4 weeks, and full effect is seen in 2-3 months.  The effects of such Botox® treatments usually last for 6-12 months, depending on individual.

Botox® – Lift & Shape Eyebrow

With aging and exposure to environmental pollutants, our skin becomes less elastic and saggy.  This may lead to a drooping of the eyebrow.  Botox® is used to correct this, giving your eyebrow a “browlift”.  You can also choose the shape of the eyebrow you fancy (arched, flared, or horizontal) to enhance your facial features.  Botox® can also be used to widen your eyes, giving a more refreshed look.

How can we use Botox® to correct medical conditions like excessive sweating?

Botox® is FDA-approved for treating excessive sweating.  By injecting Botox® into problem areas like underarms, hands and feet, the related nerve impulse (to the sweat glands) is temporarily relaxed and prevented from reaching the sweat gland, thereby preventing sweat production. Most patients report a substantial decrease in sweating within 3-5 days.  Repeated treatment is usually recommended within 5-7 months.
